SEVENTH YEAR

The book closed with a thump and a cloud of dust. Damien didn't want to admit that this was one of the very rare occasions when reading just wasn't going to solve the problem. It was a pretty big problem at that. For the first time in his life Damien felt something for someone that was more than the typical friendship. It was very unlike anything he could have imagined. But of course there wasn't anything he could do about it. And if he could, should he? These were the questions currently plaguing his mind. Very rarely had Damien Nott ever read anything that he hadn't taken in, absorbed with his mind and moved on. Instead he had read the same page over and over and still hadn't paid any attention to what he was seeing. It was an incredibly horrible feeling. It made him feel almost vulnerable. He could really never recall a time when he was this, for lack of a better word, confused.
He placed the book on his bedside table and got up. Maybe a little walk would clear his mind. On second thought, spying his broom leaning against the wall, a flight would be much more suitable. There was really nothing like the feeling of flying. Yes, definitely the better option. He grabbed his broom and made his way out of the castle, waiting only briefly before kicking off and heading up into the air. He wasn't going to be doing anything fancy, though as the Quidditch Captain of the Slytherin Team, he could have. But there could be people watching. Damien told himself he wasn't going to show off, but really he just didn't want anyone on an opposing team getting any ideas.
It felt a little safer to think up in the air, away from anyone else. The wind rushing through his hair as he soared over the grounds. It was safe to think that maybe there was a way that having feelings for Laurel Flint would be alright. Over the years he had just brushed the feelings off as a crush of sorts, though he wouldn't have used that word exactly. But the incident in the Astronomy Tower had gotten him reconsidering. He had to acknowledge that what he felt for the girl was obviously not going to go away. Which was entirely inconvenient as she was dating Lestrange. Even though Damien hated the guy with a passion that words didn't begin to describe, he wasn't the type of guy to steal, and for the moment he seemed to be making Laur happy. So what was Damien supposed to do anyway?
His thoughts were interrupted when he saw a figure lying down on the ground. The flight hadn't cleared his mind, perhaps a bit of conversation would. He flew down and hovered over the girl, who had turned out to be Sage. “If you're going to sleep, a bed might be more comfortable,” he joked.

A smirk appeared on Damien's face. He hadn't tried sleeping in the seventh year's girl's dormitories, but he had been in the sixth years. The thought crossed his mind that if Laurel ever broke up with Thaddeus it might actually be feasible that Damien would be in the seventh years dorms if for no other reason than to just talk to Laurel. But that thought needed to just leave his mind. After the Astronomy Tower, Damien's future had just become even more unclear. But he shrugged and gave a chuckle for Sage anyway. “You're correct. I haven't even been into the seventh year female dorms yet. But I have been to visit in the sixth years and it's such a task to get up there I don't do it often. You girls are lucky in that aspect, don't you think? If you want to see us you just walk up the stairs. If we try to get in on your side the stairs turns into a steep slope. One has to get creative. I think flying is the best option. It's certainly the most convenient.”
Damien didn't know if he even needed to have Quidditch tryouts this year. Most of the team would stay the same. They had some strong players and he wasn't about to get rid of them. But he was having them anyway, if for no other reason than to keep up appearances. It would make the headmaster happy and he was sure his current players were better than any new ones they would get. They already had more experience and they worked together well. In response to Sage's question he shook his head and landed on the ground next to her before taking a seat in the grass. “No. I posted the tryouts parchment yesterday in the common room though...” He trailed off for a minute and then added “I think your position is safe, though. I mean, unless you lost your ability to fly over the summer.” His voice was teasing, which was nice because this was actually helping to clear his head.
“So you just come out for some fresh air then?” He rested his broom next to him on the ground, taking care not to break the bristles on the bottom. His broom was one of the more important possessions Damien had, though he knew they had the money for him to just buy another one if he needed to. It was just that he had already gotten very comfortable with this one.
