It was a nice evening in the Hufflepuff common room. The fire, though a bit unnecessary, crackled happily as the room hummed with minor activities. The rustle of books or a frustrated groan from a studying student, the quiet chatter and giggles from a small group and the occasional loud shout or yell from the dorm. As time passed, the activities died down as the badgers retired to their sleeping quarters. Bast loved the place and visited the place almost everyday but it was rare that she stayed for long. Today was one of those rare days. At the moment she was only looking through papers and lounging on one of the couches but she was actually there on official business. It was around the time when the professor asked her badgers what they wanted to do with their lives. One of the jobs the heads of house preformed. So far, so good. No unexpected 'I don't know what to do!' which was especially good. Next up was Bethany Campbell. Even better. The girl was confident and seemed to know what she wanted from herself so this wouldn't be too much trouble.
"Don't worry Cooks. We'll be back home soon. Just one more student left for the day." The kelpie, who was currently in the form of a cat, paced the room impatiently. Bast knew she probably shouldn't have brought her pet with her but the witch foolishly dilly-dallied and there had been no more time left to bring the water-demon back to the tent they considered home. There was no way she would've let Cookie go back on her own either. Though Bast trusted her pet enough to bring her into class, she just didn't want to take the risk of letting her go free. Cookie was tame but she was still a kelpie and there was still a possibility of her just making a pit stop at the lake then the next morning one of the students would be missing. You'd never suspect the tabby cat curled up by the professor was a shape-shifting water demon who could consume you at will.

Beth was sat on her bed in the Hufflepuff dormitory, deciding on her future. That was scary, but it was almost true. It was the night when she was supposed to sit down with her head of house, who also happened to be her Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, and discuss her future career. Now Beth knew many things. For instance, she knew that when she thought about her future, she imagined living in her birthplace of Framlingham, in a lovely little house with her perfect husband, and their perfect children, with a good job. What that good job would be, however, Beth hadn't thought of yet. She liked people, and solving problems, and helping them out, so she thought that she might make a good Healer. But how do you decide at that age, the job that you'd probably hold forever? It was a scary thought, making such a big decision. She was biting her lip, a sign that she was both nervous and stressed out. Knowing it was getting close to the time slot that she'd been given, she rose from her bed, knocking off some of the books that she'd spread out over her bed, in the hope of finding some sort of clue as to what the perfect career for her would be. It's not like it would be there in bold letters, spelled out for her, but she was desperate to figure out whether this was the right choice.
Sucking in a breath, she picked up the books that had fallen off, and put them back where they had been for the past hour or so of her life. Next on her checklist of things to do, right under freak out a bit about her future, was to check that she looked good. The mirror in the girls dormitory helped her tick this box off, and she knew that she couldn't put off her impending doom anymore. Sighing, she made her way down the stairs and toward where her head of house was waiting for her. At least the atmosphere of the common room was fairly relaxing tonight. The fire had been lit by the house elves, and she enjoyed hearing the sounds as it crackled away in it's fireplace. Beth put her brave face on, and slid into the chair opposite her mentor for the evening, with a big smile on her face. "Hello Professor, it's nice to see you again!" she said, her bright smile hiding as much of her nerves as possible. She was a strong girl, it would hardly be that bad, to get through the next hour or so of her life, would it? She avoided her professors eyes for a moment, casting her own at first, to the fire, and then to the cat that was curled up by her professor. It was a cute tabby cat, and Beth wished for a moment that she'd chosen a cat to bring with her, but in all fairness, she did find it useful having her own owl. ”So, is this the part where we map out my future?” she joked, trying to appear light-hearted, as opposed to full up with nervous thoughts.

"Good evening Miss Campbell. I apologize for taking up your time to, indeed, 'map out' your future." Bast let out a small smirk as she fixed up her papers and prepared to give her full attention to the girl in front of her. Those who had known her as a kid would have never thought the young Leporarius would be a good teacher but she was. She genuinely cared for quite a number of her students and gave them her full support in their studies. Personal matters on the other hand were different. The witch had her own morals and code to live by and she did so quite... passionately. It very rarely ended up conflicting with he work so it wasn't really an issue. Yet. "Well then, I suppose we should begin with a simple question. What are you planing to do after you take your NEWTS? Maybe attempt auror training? With the classes you have now you could be qualified for training, You also have exceptional grades in Herbology and Potions. That with your good personality could get you into the healing business. Or maybe you would like to find a job in the Muggle world?"
As Bast spoke, she couldn't help but be reminded of the time when she had been a student being asked the same questions. She had no clue as to what she should do. Young Bast was curious and wanted adventure so it was inevitable that she hopped from job to job for the first few years of her adult life. From a magical creatures farm, a janitor at the ministry, and working for her family, she had quite a few interesting experiences from that carefree life. Now, she was definitely more grounded. With a scarred mind and two pets to feed, she decided to stay at Hogwarts. Besides, the job was fulfilling enough. Both money-wise and emotion-wise. As the professor waited for her student to respond, she gazed at her pet who was now busy shifting into different forms. Cat to mouse to owl to badger. It was amusing for a few moments but she finally made a disapproving 'tsk' and the kelpie turned back into a cat and settled down. I could go for some cider right now...

Beth didn't really know what her teacher's reaction would be when she said what she was really thinking. She didn't really know what her plan for her job would be, but she had thought about travelling for a while, after finishing her NEWT's, maybe taking up some odd-jobs all over the world, just to tide her over, and then returning with a real plan for her life, other than some sketchy image of what she wanted. That was what she was hoping, though as well as a time to see the world, experience other cultures, and all in all become a much more rounded person, for Beth it was also a way to procrastinate on her decision on what she wanted to do for, oh, forever. "Oh it's no problem really, there wasn't anything else I was planning on doing tonight, besides, it's for a good cause." Beth said, with another smile. She knew she'd picked subjects that she'd enjoyed well enough, and that fit together, and that would definitely be useful for a possible career as a St Mungo's healer, so she'd always have that, but how was she supposed to know if she'd be good at that job? Or that she'd enjoy that job? It was impossible to tell until you'd worked in that field, and that was almost impossible until she'd left school.
Beth hadn't heard of anyone being responsible enough to get a chance to work in St Mungo's before they'd left school. She did like helping people, and would have an excellent bedside manner. Her caring attitude certainly made sure she was perfect for that job, but was this what she really wanted from her life? Beth asked herself that question often, and the answer was always the same, a good job, a loving husband and one day, a charming set of children. She didn't know when she'd want a family, but she knew she'd want a stable job and a stable marriage first. She knew that now was not a good time for that, and always took precautions to prevent something like that happening, as best she could. She knew she'd love to see a few places before settling down. Beth was never adventurous, but the chance to shop in Paris or Italy could not be passed up on. Then of course there was obvious sightseeing to do.
The professor meant well, Beth could tell that, and maybe she should just say straight up that she wasn't absolutely sure? Yeah, why not tell the truth? "Well, in hall honesty Professor, I'm not entirely sure." she spoke quickly, and bit her lip after she'd finished. She hadn't thought about being an Auror, that was another possibility, although it would be dangerous, and if she wanted a stable family life, might not be the best job. She had no idea what to say or what to do. She watched as the cat transformed before her eyes into several different forms before returning to a cat. "Is that a Kelpie?"Beth asked, recognizing similar characteristics. She'd done Care of Magical Creatures of course, and had enjoyed that. There were too many options! "I was leaning toward Healer, but I'm not sure what I want to do for definite" Beth confessed, sucking in a breath of anticipation. tagged: @bastlion notes:hope it's ok! lyrics: breathe - ryan star. wearing: this, clicky! words: 548.

There's a fake wise saying that Bast never listens so don't expect her to. It was true, to an extent. The truth was, Bast did listen but she tended to unconsciously filter out words. By removing words that had the potential to confuse her, her brain understood things better and quicker. Of course, there was a tendency for her mind to filter out important things that she didn't agree with along with unimportant words. A drawback to her refined thinking process. "Yeah, Cookie is a kelpie. I'm planning on bringing her in for one of your classes so you'll see her again..." The woman let the dialogue go off topic and mulled over the words being directed at her. Then, it hit her. "Wait. Wait, wait, wait, wait wait, wait wait." Her mind got the words out of storage to allow her to fully process them. If you had microscopic hearing then you would hear the sounds of her confused mind loading and clicking things into place. It took at least five seconds for her to finally finish loading. "Okay. So.... You are saying that you are still unsure of what you are going to do after school, right? Yes. Yes, that is what you are saying."
A few deep breaths then a low, frustrated groan escaped Bast's throat. Looks like she would be here longer than she thought. "I don't mean to send you into a panic but...." An unintelligible noise was used here to express her frustration. "I know you probably here this a thousand times a day but your future is important! You don't want to end up taking a bunch of jobs. I mean, you might have to take on a job you don't like. Or end up becoming a middle aged teacher who had no life besides her job." Perhaps the professor's examples were a bit reflective on her life regrets but she wasn't thinking about that at the moment. Nope.
