you are my shooting star you give me love and light through the shadows of the night chester bennett never had never taken a sick day since he arrived at hogwarts. he loved school, and he thought that taking a sick day was a sin. even if he was near death, he wasn't going to skip a class or two because of whatever illness it was. it could have been anything. (okay, maybe not anything. if he'd been diagnosed with something that was contageous, he'd probably be in bed right now.) you couldn't blame the seventh year student for not wanting to dump himself onto the couch in the hufflepuff common room. it wouldn't be right. it wouldn't be... proper. especially for a prefect. because what prefect in their own mind would want to be keeled over on the couch of their house common room?
... oh, yes. chester. and let's get the facts straight - it wasn't a very pretty sight. no, there was no vomit. there was a bottle of ginger ale; handed to him by one of the sixth years who had just come from the kitchens. it was a gift from the student to the prefect, who knew that something wasn't right the second that she saw him walking down the stairs with his lounge blanket wrapped over his shoulders, snapped, and zipped up from the feet up to just shy of his waist. as a prefect herself, she knew that something was extremely wrong. and granted, seeing someone (anyone) nearly tipsy coming from the dorms? not a pleasant feeling.
"everyone, please leave me to the couch. and my canada dry," chester said, closing his eyes when he saw that some people had come in. he didn't want to be talking to people when he was in the condition he was currently in. "i'm a poor, lost traveler in a world of my own..." it wasn't the way that he intended to announce that he was feeling like utter cow dung, but it was the first thing to roll off the tongue. he silently apologized to his parents, who weren't even nearby. if he knew that they could hear him, then he knew that he was going to be in trouble nonetheless. truer words had never been spoken, however, given the fact that chester was barely coherent after that. mumbles? yeah, like everyone walking into the room knew that.
and if anyone was nearby with any sort of cough syrup, now would be a great time to give it to him. sleep wasn't going to be the only silent killer of the sickness. words: amount • tagged: anyone • outfit: clicky

Classes were beginning to come to an end for the Hufflepuff girl. She was carrying a few books with her as she made her way down to the common room. It was lucky that she had gotten sorted into the house closest to the kitchens. She was pretty sure they weren't supposed to be in there, but the house elves never sent her away when she just wanted a light snack. So she stopped there before continuing on her short journey to the room. The house elves were pleased, as usual, that a student had come down to see them. Mackenzie wasn't exactly a frequent visitor, but she wasn't a stranger either. She had a nice chat with one of them. She frowned to herself though, thinking that they really waited on people far too much. At least they seemed to enjoy themselves. She waved goodbye with a piece of pumpkin cake wrapped up in some kind of magical saran wrap. That was the only way she could describe it. It was clear, but she knew as soon as she took it off none of the food would be sticking to it like it might have if she had wrapped it up in the muggle stuff. Sometimes magic was pretty awesome.
As soon as she said the password and got into the common room Mac knew something wasn't right. Usually this was the time of day that several students would be either getting back from class or heading out to another one. Or some of them, like her, were making their way to the dorms to pick up more books (and have a snack, because the next meal was just a little too far away for her liking today). But instead of people swarming the couch and chairs like she had become used to, there was just one guy there. One not-so-well looking guy. She recognized him. Mac wasn't the most outgoing of teenagers, but she had become mostly comfortable around those in her house.
“Hey, Chester.” She put on a sympathetic smile. “You don't look to well. You don't need to go to the hospital wing or anything do you?” She leaned against the back of the couch, holing her few books to her chest.

you are my shooting star you give me love and light through the shadows of the night it seemed as though chester was almost asleep on the couch. his eyes were closed, and his chest rose and fell with each breath that he took. of course, one wouldn't know about the breathing if they didn't realize that he had turned himself over to his side. sleeping on his back, on the couch? it didn't feel right to him. he slept sideways all the time, and this was no exception. his bottle of canada dry was sitting on the table next to the couch - which had been placed ever so graciously next to him by the same sixth year who brought him the drink in the first place. finally, it was time for him to get the sleep he deserved. he hadn't gotten that cough syrup yet, but at least sleep was going to get rid of some of the suffering.
but before he fully boarded what he called the 'dreamland express', he could hear the door to the common room open. this couldn't have been a party crasher; oh, no. he knew that classes were still in progress, and that some students were coming from or going to their next class themselves. it was fate, however, that the next person to come into the room would notice him almost half-asleep on the couch. chester could hear the footsteps coming closer to him, and he opened his eyes the second he heard a feminine voice pipe up. it was another one of his housemates - a sixth year, he knew that much (he didn't know exactly who, based on the voice - asking him if he needed to go to the hospital wing.
it was proper that chester turn onto his back to talk to this girl. when he did, he could see mackenzie leaning up against the back of the couch; books in her arms. either she was exchanging books, or she was done for the day. she was probably there to swap books. he gave a smile as best as he could to the hufflepuff girl and felt the sudden urge to cough. when he finished hacking away, he spoke up. "hi. it's just a bug or something," he said, sitting up just slightly. "i think if this doesn't go away when tomorrow comes, i might be taking that trip to the hospital wing."
he knew that he didn't want to go up there for something as trivial as an illness. for all he knew, this bug was a twenty-four hour thing, and he'd be fine later in the day tomorrow. he just didn't want to miss any more classes than he would already have to. words: 441 • tagged: mackenzie • outfit: clicky

Mac wasn't sure what to do at this point. She was naturally a very helpful person, or at least she naturally always tried to be helpful. But she was just an ordinary student. There wasn't really anything special about her. She wasn't exceptionally strong, or smart, or even outgoing. She was the typical Hufflepuff student – kind, patient, and hard working. But she wasn't brave or anything. She just wanted to make sure her housemate was alright. But he seemed to not want her help, so she wasn't entirely sure what to do. She had suggested the Hospital Wing in more or less words. She didn't know what else she was supposed to do. She also thought it was odd that he had chosen to just lie around in the common room. Whenever she was sick she wanted to be alone, and the most alone place would be in her bed with the curtains drawn.
She stood there shifting her body weight from foot to foot trying to decide what would be the most helpful in this situation. Maybe she should just go. But she hated the idea of just leaving someone there. She started to feel a little awkward. Even if this was just a quick little illness, it would have been better for him to have gone to the Hospital Wing. It wasn't like it cost them anything, and the nurses were probably looking for something to do anyway.
“Well, how about getting some soup or something? Our common room is the closest to the kitchens. You shouldn't run into too many people on the way. I'll even go with you if you want.” She tried giving him a smile, but she didn't know if that was really the right thing to do. She was normally a pretty smiley person so she figured he probably wouldn't think anything of it anyway. But she just didn't know how else to help him right now.
ooc: sorry this was so short.
