general description: alex is the type of girl to favour a pair of blue jeans and a t-shirt over anything else, though she is commonly stuck wearing her school uniform. if this is the case, she doesn't wear the skirt like most of the other girls her age, but instead walks around in the pants that the boys wear. the reason for this is because it makes it much easier for her to move without having to worry about dealing with a clothing malfunction. she doesn't care much for fashion, which puts her a little at odds with most of the other girls in her year, and she isn't exactly the definition of "femininity," but she knows who she is and what she can do, and to her, those are far more important things then style.

history:
alexandra grace harker was the second of two daughters born to muggle parents patrick and martha, and quickly demonstrated to her parents that she was a child unlike most her age. the noted that the differences between their two girls were unlike most would see in children. the two girls were always together when they were young, with christine constantly watching out for alex to make sure that she wasn't alone and being bullied by some of the bigger kids. it made her a social outcast right from the beginning, always allowing her kid sister to tag along when she was going somewhere, making sure that she got a turn on the swings or shared the ice cream that she picked up from the corner store. and when she wasn't outside running around with some of the other children, alex spent much of her time curled up in front of the large front window of the family home, snuggled into the cushions with a book in her hands.
but about a month before her eleventh birthday, things changed.
a woman arrived on the front step of the harker home and asked to speak to her parents, saying that she needed to see them in regards to alexandra's future. neither patrick nor martha were prepared for the news that their beloved younger daughter was a witch, someone who had been born with a gift for magic. and while both of them were incredibly shocked to hear such a thing, they agreed that they had known for quite some time that alex was special, different from the other children her age. with the help of the woman who came to her, alex was taken to a place known as diagon alley and her introduction to the world of magic began. her muggle money was turned into galleons and the required items were purchased for her, a train ticket placed in her hand so that she could board the hogwarts express on the first of september and go off on her very first year. and while christine was a little jealous of the fact that her younger sister was going somewhere that she could not follow her, she made alex promise to come back and tell her all of the amazing things that hogwarts had to offer.
the two wrote letters to one another all the time as her magical education continued, christine having to get used to the idea that she could not simply drop her letter into the post to have it delivered, but instead having to tie it to the leg of an owl. and all the while, christine was growing more and more jealous of the things that alex was learning and doing, especially when she would return home at christmas and summer holidays and not show her a single thing. alex explained that it was because there were laws against underage magic in effect, but christine was still not pleased. their relationship slowly began to dwindle in alex's fourth year, when the letters became less frequent and the details of her home life sparse. around that time, she received a rather urgent letter stating that she needed to return home. it was then, just around christmas time, that she was informed that her father had disappeared from the family home and not been seen in weeks. alex was devastated at having lost her father in such a manner, feeling as though there was something that she might have been able to do for him in order to prevent his disappearance. everyone around them had learned that patrick had been sick for quite some time but the details of his illness had been kept from her, and christine blamed alex for not wanting to help their father with the magic that she possessed. it was believed that patrick had then left because he didn't want his family to further deal with his illness. whether he is alive or not, she still does not know.
that summer, when alex returned and began to prepare to return to hogwarts for her sixth year, the things between the two girls hit an all time high. christine, now eighteen years old and always bitter about the fact that her younger sister was a witch, lost her temper entirely. she told alex that she would forever be alone, simply because she was a freak of nature with no sense of style, no concept of beauty and no love for anyone but herself. heartbroken over the things that her sister said to her, alex returned to hogwarts as a quieter soul who threw herself into her studies and shut the rest of the world out. there were a few people that she still kept as her friends, but she wouldn't allow herself to grow close to anyone else for fear of being hurt in the future as she had been hurt by her sister. she now feels rather alone in the world, but is fiercely determined to prove to both her sister and the rest of the world that just because she is a muggle born witch, she can make a difference in the lives of other people. and she's determined to get there, one way or another.- - - - - - -

Oh, how glad she was to be back.
The summer months felt like they had continued to drag well past their allotted time when finally her letter arrived at home, the last one that she would receive from Hogwarts aside from her NEWT results. She looked over her book list with a sense of accomplishment, knowing that she had done well in her studies over the past six years and had rightfully earned her place at Hogwarts. While there were some who would continue to think that they didn't really need to try in order to get anywhere in life, Lina had always felt differently about that. Her studies were incredibly important to her, so much so that it was often wondered how she had ended up in Gryffindor instead of Ravenclaw with so many other students who took such pride in their work. She had once wondered that herself, until she had finally contented herself with the knowledge that the Sorting Hat had not lead her astray. She was where she belonged, among the brave souls who inhabited Gryffindor Tower, just as her parents were before her.
But this year was going to prove to be one of the most intense ones of her young life, for Melina Wood was more than aware of the pressures that would begin to come down on her this year. There were her studies to keep up with, as she planned on going on to be a Healer and would need top grades in almost all of her classes in order to achieve this. And then there was Quidditch. As the captain of the house team she couldn't afford to waste any time when it came down to figuring out how best to combat the other houses, knowing that she would need to keep herself working smoothly in order to plan how best to squash Slytherin house. After all, this was the last opportunity she would get to do so, and it would be a great disappointment to her if she were to be the captain of the team that lost to the silver and green kits of the Slytherin's. Coming in behind Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff she could handle, and while she did her best to keep old prejudices out of her life when it came to houses, a part of her would forever be determined to take down Slytherin at every available chance.
Dark locks moved lightly around her face as she sat in the courtyard of the school, a hand reaching up to brush them away from her brown orbs as she attempted to read one of the books she had found over the summer. It was a Muggle novel, one that she had come across rather innocently when she had been out among them and looking at the different things they had to offer. The open-air markets of the summer were always some of her favourite times, looking at all of the brightly coloured vegetables and fruits, smelling the freshly baked goods and marveling at the expertly crafted paintings that they all wanted to see to those who wandered by. But it had been the tiny book stall that had caught her attention, where an older woman sat quietly with her cane and watched as almost everyone passed her by without a glance. Oh, how thrilled she had been when Melina walked up to her and began to look at the collection of readings she had gathered over the years...
The book itself was entitled Anne of Green Gables, which detailed the life of a young girl who was mistakenly brought to home that had requested a boy, and managed to win the hearts of almost everyone around her with her wonderful imagination. Melina couldn't help but smile a little as she read the different things that went through the young girl's head, reading her vast descriptions and lovely use of poetry when she spoke of the things she dearly loved. An imagination like that was something that most people seemed to outgrow all too quickly, she thought to herself, turning the page to continue reading. It was a shame really, to think that the world had to be so literal. There was hardly any room for dreams in a place like that, unless they were practical goals that someone had chosen as their meaning in life. Still, the brunette sighed lightly, closing the pages and letting herself contemplate the idea. Wasn't that ultimately what she was doing when she had chosen to become a Healer? Was she not picking a practical path in life as well? Well, it was certainly more practical that believing yourself to be a fairy queen, she supposed.
